5 of My Favorite Christian Songs About Home

These aren’t in any particular order.

But God has used them each to minister to my soul in various seasons of life. I’ll link them in the titles so you can click to enjoy.

1) Take Me Back” is by Cochren & Co. and it’s the newest song in this shortlist. This 2021 release states the main desire in its chorus. “Take me back, To the place that feels like home, To the people I can depend on, To the faith that’s in my bones…”

2) Softly and Tenderly was written by Will Thompson in 1880. That makes it the oldest on my list. It’s hard not to love this oldie that’s found in many church hymnals. The Holy Spirit has used its lyrics to tug on many hearts over the last hundred-plus years. “Come home, Come home; you who are weary come home; earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling; calling, O Sinner, come home!”

3) I’ve Never Been This Homesick Before was written by none other than the prolific Dottie Rambo in 1977. This favorite has been sung and recorded by many. The link I’ve attached is a Gaither video with Jessie Dixon and Dottie Rambo singing. But, I also enjoy this version by Jimmy Swaggart, featuring John Starnes.

4) Sweet Beulah Land was released in 1980. It was written by Squire Parsons. Its opening verse says, “I’m kind of homesick for a country To which I’ve never been before. No sad goodbyes will there be spoken For time won’t matter anymore.”

5) Not Home Yet is written and sung by Steven Curtis Chapman. It was released in 1997. I encourage you to listen slowly and enjoy the lyrics to this one. “Keep on looking ahead, Let our hearts not forget, We are not home yet.”

*BONUS – This one was released in 2011 by the group Building 429. Where I Belong features a catchy chorus that says, “All I know is I’m not home yet, This is not where I belong, Take this world and give me Jesus, This is not where I belong.”

For some reason, I’m drawn to songs on this theme. I even like many songs about home that wouldn’t be classified as Christian. I’ll share them with you another time.

  1. Pastor William, I hope you are well and caring on with the service in house of the Lord.

Man of God I really admire to host you in Northern Uganda next year 2024.

Kindly consider Uganda on your diary calendar

    Be blessed

  2. Songs about home …

    1. O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go. The first time I remember singing this hymn was at the funeral of one of my mother’s best friends. ‘Home’ does not feature in the words, but it is a hymn about home. This verse:

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee.
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
and feel the promise is not vain,
    that morn shall tearless be.

    2. My Father’s House by Manor Collective. I found this song recently – recorded by a group of musicians in the UK. This is a song that reminds me of Psalm 84 which is one of my favourite books of the Bible.

    Father hear my prayer
A thousand worries cloud my mind but I know you are there
    Show me where to go
Even when the rain falls down, you’re leading me back home

    3. Highway by As Isaac. We had the opportunity to help these wonderful people from Chattanooga when they were on tour in the UK and Ireland nine years ago. They stayed in our home and blessed us with an impromptu concert in our living room. If the link works, it will take you to a brief recording I made.

    4. O Thou Who Camest From Above is one of the few hymns I remember from childhood. I loved the long words then. Now I just love the words. And the tune – ‘Hereford’ which coincidentally is where I live now, but to be honest, I’m ready for home when home is ready for me.

    5. Then back up to date with an offering from 2023 – Home by Christy Nockels. Christy always blesses me.

Long before anyone looked my way
    You threaded my beginnings
Even before I lived one day
    You saw the very ending
And oh what a comfort just to know
That I was made by you and for you
‘Cause would’t that make you my Home, where I belong

I also like the bonus song on this blog and would have chosen it if William hadn’t got there first!
