The Lost Virtue: Honoring His Church

This virtue has quietly slipped from our culture and, at times, even from local churches.

The Scriptures are clear. How we treat one another matters deeply.

⚓ 1 Peter 2:17 anchors us. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.”

This is not about favoritism; it’s all about family responsibility.

The way we HONOR God’s Church becomes a testimony that points others to Jesus.

If we are going to properly HONOR His Church, we must first understand this foundational truth.

HONOR shapes the culture of God’s Kingdom.

Every local church has a culture. The culture of any local church is the greatest predictor of our use for God’s Kingdom.

Whether accidental or intentional, culture is shaped, taught, protected, and practiced by positive AND negative behaviors. And the Bible teaches us that HONOR should be the primary positive force shaping the culture of His Church. That’s why the Spirit insists we love the brotherhood.” This is more than emotional affection; it speaks of our responsibility to respect one another.

HONOR shows up in how we speak to one another, how we treat one another, and how we stay committed to one another when things are imperfect. And they always will be!

A culture of honor does not mean we never disagree. It means we refuse to dishonor one another when we do. Honor doesn’t demand uniformity. It allows for differences without division. Many local churches struggle, not because of doctrine, but because of demeanor. Churches are rarely divided by the woodpeckers without; it’s the termites within that destroy them.

When HONOR is missing in action, disrespect is proven. Criticism becomes casual. Conversations go private. Gossip grows. Small offenses grow large. BUT when HONOR governs His Church, something powerful happens. People feel safe to grow. Leaders can lead. Correction is joyfully received.

The world is watching. And the internal culture of your local church either confirms OR contradicts the Gospel we proclaim and profess to believe. But when our words turn into honorable actions, we prove that we love the family of believers (NIV).

The Holy Spirit illustrates the relational and specific nature of this love for us According to 1st Peter 3:7, husbands love their wives by obeying God’s command to honor them. According to 1st Timothy 5:17, Christians love their pastors by obeying God’s command to honor them. This all matters, because

The way we honor God’s Church becomes a testimony that points others to Jesus. So, the necessary follow-up truth is this

HONOR is revealed by whom we serve.

We all serve someone. Most people insist on their comforts. But Christians are called to serve Christ, NOT their preferences.

Jesus makes this clear in John 12:26. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.” When we serve Christ faithfully in His Church. The way we honor God’s Church becomes a testimony that points others to Jesus.

Notice God’s order. We do not serve to be honored. In God’s Kingdom, HONOR is given by the Father as we humbly serve Jesus. This confronts an erroneous mindset we must expose.

We like to associate honor with giftedness, platforms, and visibility. But the Spirit consistently points us back to faithfulness.

Honor thrives in the local church when serving others is valued more than status. When servanthood is celebrated, pride loses its grip, humility multiplies, and our unity deepens. I see it in who’s willing to help without being asked, who stays when things get hard, and who serves when no one is watching.

After all, the Spirit is teaching us this: HONOR is not about being noticed. It’s about being faithful. And when HONOR is practiced through faithful service, it produces eternal joy.

HONOR sustains His Church from here to eternity.

Jesus’ evaluation is in Matthew 25:21. Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”

Jesus celebrates faithful loyalty. This is the language of His Kingdom. And honor is spoken fluently by those who serve God faithfully over time.

His Church does NOT endure because we are impressive. She endures because God is faithful! She is sustained by faithful individuals who keep showing up long after the appeal of something else fades away. Faithfulness still matters!

HONOR sustains the Church when challenges come and seasons change because HONOR is anchored in God’s purposes.

When HONOR is present, we stay GRATEFUL, rooted, and committed to the work God is doing through this church. And the Spirit reminds us that faithful servants WILL hear the affirmations that matter the most: Well done Enter in…”

So we must understand that the way we honor God’s Church becomes a testimony that points others to Jesus.

When HONOR shapes the local church, His Church grows.

Honor is not loud. It is faithful. It does not always make headlines, but it always leaves a legacy. It is revealed in how we treat one another, serve one another, and remain faithful.

The Holy Spirit has made this unmistakable point: The way we honor God’s Church becomes a testimony that points others to Jesus.

Is your life marked by honor? Not just your attitude, but your daily actions. Not just your beliefs, but your daily behaviors. Not just your words, but your daily service.
