Most often heard at funerals, it has historically been called The Shepherd’s Psalm.

That description indicates it’s a possession of the Shepherd. However, if you’ll take a quick read of Psalm 23, you’ll see that it’s more appropriate for us to think of this comforting Psalm as a gift provided by the Shepherd and belonging to His sheep.

The Psalm begins with, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” It is comforting to know that as a follower of Christ; He is my Shepherd, and I want for nothing I need. He supplies every good gift and every perfect gift.

Every blessing imaginable is present in between the first and last verses of this Psalm of the sheep.

But let’s skip to the end.

The Psalm ends with, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”

In our culture, if someone is habitually following you, we call them a stalker.

But instead of impending danger, we sense powerful providence in pursuit. Listen closely. Perhaps you can hear them whisper, “we know where you live too.”

Who’s stalking you?

Make no mistake about it. There is an unseen, spiritual world, and you are being followed.

It’s great to know that we who belong to Jesus, the Chief Shepherd of our souls, have His special agents {Goodness and Mercy} always in pursuit. They accomplish our Shepherd’s plan to cause all things to work together for good in our lives.

Just how good and merciful is our God?

Consider this: “He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). That’s how we started this journey. And now, on a daily basis, He is with us every step of the way.

He is the help of those who seek Him. Call upon Him in prayer today for the help you need, and decide to dwell in His presence every day!
